Start with the device, not with a chart. The device decides the format, the format decides the VG/PG ratio, and the ratio decides which bottles will actually work in the thing you own. Flavour is the last decision, not the first.
Most e-liquid guides open with a table matching people to a mg number. We have deleted ours, because that is not a judgement a shop is in a position to make for you. What a shop can tell you is what each device is built around and what strengths each range is made for.
Step one: what are you vaping on?
Two answers, two completely different shelves.
A high-resistance MTL pod. Small device, tight draw, low power. Think of the UWELL Caliburn A3 Pod Kit 520mAh MTL at KSh 4,000, the Geekvape Sonder Q2 1350mAh 30W at KSh 3,800, the VAPORESSO XROS 5 1500mAh 30W at KSh 5,200 or the UWELL Caliburn G4 1300mAh 35W at KSh 5,000. The industry convention is that coils above roughly 0.8 ohm are built for mouth-to-lung use. These devices take a nicotine salt, conventionally made at or near 50/50 VG/PG, because a thinner liquid wicks into a small high-resistance coil more reliably than a thick one.
A sub-ohm mesh tank or higher-power pod mod. Wider draw, much more vapour per puff. The VOOPOO Drag S3 3000mAh 60W at KSh 6,200 and the VOOPOO Drag 5 Mod Kit 177W Dual 18650 at KSh 10,000 sit here. These take freebase at a low mg, in a high-VG ratio, typically 70/30.
Getting this wrong is the most expensive mistake in e-liquid. A thick 70/30 freebase in a small MTL pod may not wick fast enough and tends to produce a burnt taste. A high-mg salt in a sub-ohm tank is generally overwhelming, because the tank vaporises several times more liquid per puff.
One caveat we will state rather than paper over: we do not publish a VG/PG ratio for the stocked salt ranges. The only two ratios in our catalogue data are Ultimate Puff and Ultimate Juice, both 70/30. Check the bottle you are buying instead of relying on a convention.
Step two: VG/PG, and what it changes
- VG is the thicker carrier. More of it generally means denser vapour, a smoother inhale, slightly muted flavour and slower wicking.
- PG is thinner. More of it generally means sharper flavour, faster wicking, less visible vapour and more throat sensation.
So a 70/30 bottle is built to make vapour in a device designed to make vapour. A 50/50 bottle is built to wick quickly into a small coil and carry flavour at low power. Neither is better. They are built for different hardware. A small number of people find PG does not agree with them, which is a genuine reason to lean higher VG, and worth knowing before you buy a large bottle.
Step three: flavour families
- Fruit and fruit ice. The largest family by some distance. Ultimate Puff On Ice, Nasty Burst Pineapple Ice, Nasty Juice Cush Man and Mango Banana.
- Slush and soft drink. Sweeter, rounder, often blue. Ultimate Puff Blue Slush, Ultimate Juice Caribbean Crush.
- Dessert and bakery. Rich and heavy. Doozy Seriously Donuts in Original Glazed, Glazed Biscuit and Raspberry Jam.
Dessert and dark fruit flavours tend to gunk a coil faster than clear menthols, so they cost more in parts over time. They also linger, which brings us to ghosting below.
Step four: bottle size and cost per ml
The full figures are in the reference table at the end. The shape of it: 10ml salts work out at KSh 70 to 80 per ml, 30ml salts at about KSh 67, and 120ml freebase bottles at roughly KSh 19 to 21.
The sensible pattern is to buy a 10ml bottle first to find out whether you like a flavour, then buy the large size of the one you liked. A 120ml bottle of something you dislike is a worse outcome than paying more per ml on a 10ml trial.
One note on delivery: free Nairobi delivery applies to orders over KSh 2,000. A single 10ml at KSh 800 does not clear it, and a single 30ml at exactly KSh 2,000 is not over it. Two bottles is.
Step five: shortfills and how a nicotine shot works
A shortfill is nicotine-free liquid supplied in a bottle with deliberate headroom, so you add the nicotine yourself.
Take the Doozy 100ml shortfill at KSh 2,300. It arrives as 100ml at 0mg in a 120ml bottle. Add two 10ml nicotine shots, and you fill the bottle to 120ml.
The arithmetic is simple:
- Two 18mg shots: 2 × 10ml × 18mg = 360mg of nicotine spread through 120ml, which is 3mg per ml
- Two 15mg shots: 2 × 10ml × 15mg = 300mg through 120ml, which is 2.5mg per ml
Shots are bought separately, and we are not going to quote a price we cannot verify, so check the current listing. Add the shots, cap it, and shake it thoroughly. It is easy to under-mix and end up with an uneven bottle.
Step six: steeping
Steeping is letting a liquid sit so the flavour settles. It matters most for dessert, bakery and heavy cream flavours, and barely at all for simple menthols.
The usual practice is to keep the bottle capped, upright, somewhere cool and dark, and shake it occasionally over several days. A freshly mixed shortfill generally benefits most. If a liquid tastes flat on day one, it is often worth leaving before writing it off.
Ghosting, and when to dedicate a pod
Ghosting is the previous flavour turning up in the next one. A pod and its wick hold residue, so a heavy dessert or a strong menthol tends to follow you into whatever you refill with.
If you rotate flavours often, keep a pod per flavour family: one for menthols, one for fruit, one for desserts. Plan that rotation, because pods are not cheap.
