The coil that started SMOK on pods
The original Nord launched in 2019, and its coil family is still in production seven years later, which tells you how many of these devices are still running. A great many of them are still in daily use in Kenya. Six coils, from a 0.6 ohm mesh that will produce a genuine lung draw down to a 1.4 ohm ceramic that is about as tight as vaping gets.
Every one presses into the base of an empty Nord pod. Coil and pod are separate purchases with separate lifespans, which was the norm at the time and is now the exception.
Six coils, three resistances, and the pairs are not duplicates
Each resistance comes twice, once as mesh or ceramic and once as conventional round wire. The mesh versions heat faster and give a cleaner flavour; the round wire versions are the older design and tend to last longer on sweetened liquid.
At 1.4 ohm, the choice is between round wire and ceramic. Ceramic takes longer to warm up and gives a noticeably drier, cleaner taste that people either prefer immediately or dislike immediately. There is not much middle ground.
Two later additions sit slightly apart from the six. SMOK make a Nord Pro-Meshed coil at 0.6 ohm for direct lung and another at 0.9 ohm for mouth-to-lung, both part of the same family and both seating in the same pods. Neither appears in most five-pack listings, so ask after them rather than assuming.
Thirteen devices, and why some of them appear twice in SMOK literature
SMOK lists this coil against thirteen devices. Several of those devices (the Nord 2, the Nord 50W, the Alike, the Fetch Mini and the RPM40) shipped with two different pods in the box, and only one of the two takes a Nord coil.
Nord and RPM are two families, not one.
This is the most misunderstood thing in the SMOK catalogue, and the reason is a fine one. A Nord 2 takes Nord coils and RPM coils, which sounds like the two are interchangeable. They are not. The device takes both because it came with two pods, and each pod accepts a different coil. Put a Nord coil in an RPM pod, and it will not seat.
So the question is never “which coil does my device take. It is “which pod am I holding?” SMOK’s own compatibility documentation names the pod in brackets after each device for exactly this reason.
One correction while we are here: the original Nord is absent from SMOK’s RPM coil device list. Bundles that sell RPM Mesh 0.4 and RPM Triple 0.6 as Nord coils are merchandising, not a SMOK family.
Bedding a coil in
Drip liquid into the wicking holes on the side of the coil until the cotton darkens, press it firmly into the empty pod, fill, and reassemble. Then leave it five minutes.
The 1.4 ohm ceramic wants longer; give it ten minutes. Ceramic absorbs liquid more slowly than cotton and is unforgiving of a first puff taken early.
What SMOK say about how long they last
Nothing at all. SMOK publish no coil life figure for any family they make, in any unit, and this one is no exception. Any “lasts a week” figure you meet is an estimate rather than a specification.
As a rough guide, the 1.4 ohm coils outlast the 0.8, which outlast the 0.6, simply because less power passes through more resistance.
Which bottle suits which end
The 1.4 ohm and 0.8 ohm coils want a 50/50 nicotine salt at twenty milligrams: BAR Salts 10ml and ELFBAR ELFLIQ 10ml are the two shelves that sell exactly that strength.
The 0.6 ohm mesh is the exception. It pulls more liquid per puff, so ten milligrams is the sensible strength there, and a slightly higher VG liquid will wick better through it than a thin 50/50 will.
