Eighty watts without a loose battery
Eighty watts is normally where a device starts asking you to buy separate batteries. Two devices here reach it without doing so, and this is the larger-celled of the pair: three thousand milliamp-hours against the SMOK Nord 5 Pod Mod Kit 2000mAh 80W’s two thousand, and nothing to unscrew, charge externally or match up.
It belongs to VOOPOO’s Argus line and not the Drag line, which is a styling distinction more than a technical one: same chipset, same platform, same coils as the Drag pod mods, in a heavier and more rugged body.
A lock switch you can feel
Most devices lock with a sequence of clicks that you can perform by accident and undo by accident. This one has a physical switch on the body, and a switch either is or is not thrown.
On a 155-gram device that will spend time in a bag alongside keys, that is a more useful feature than it sounds, and on a matatu in Kenya it is the difference between a locked device and one that has been firing in your bag for twenty minutes. The VOOPOO Drag S3 Pod Mod Kit 3000mAh 60W uses a capacitive sensor instead, which is cleverer and less certain.
Turbo mode, and how to read the claim
Alongside Smart and RBA there is a Turbo mode, which VOOPOO markets as a twenty-five per cent increase in vapour volume in one second. That is a manufacturer marketing claim rather than a measured figure.
What is not in doubt is that the device reaches eighty watts and that the 0.15 ohm coil is rated for sixty to eighty watts. Whatever Turbo does to the ramp, the ceiling is real.
The same PnP X coils as four other devices here
VOOPOO PnP X Replacement Coils run from 0.15 ohm at sixty to eighty watts, through 0.3 ohm at thirty-two to forty, to 0.6 ohm at eighteen to twenty-three for mouth-to-lung use. The coil presses into whichever cartridge is fitted.
One claim to ignore: VOOPOO’s own storefront describes this as a platform accepting PnP, PnP X and PnP VM series coils. Their main product page says PnP X only, and three independent hands-on reviews confirm the product page. It takes PnP X.
What eighty watts needs in the tank
The kit arrives set up for direct lung on a 0.15 ohm coil, and at eighty watts there is one correct answer: freebase, 70/30, three milligrams. Salt at any real strength through a coil that wide is not a strong vape but a bad idea, and the difference between those two things is worth being clear about.
The E-Liquids shelf is the right one, in a bottle size that respects a five-millilitre cartridge at eighty watts. Ultimate Juice 120ml and Nasty Juice 60ml both fit the ratio. Swap to the MTL cartridge with a 0.6 ohm coil, and it becomes a salt device again, at which point the Nicotine Salts shelf is the right one.
What is disputed about this device
VOOPOO’s own storefront renders a width of 56.9 millimetres, which is physically implausible for a device of this shape; the figure quoted everywhere else, around 35.5, is the credible one. Their storefront also lists an MTL cartridge in the box, where their own product page says only the DTL cartridge ships.
The fill method is sometimes given as top fill. VOOPOO say side fill, and the port does sit low on the side of the cartridge, which reconciles the two. Side fill is the correct answer.
Two devices at eighty watts, and how they differ
Eighty watts is the ceiling for a sealed battery on this shelf, and two devices sit at it. Against the SMOK Nord 5 Pod Mod Kit 2000mAh 80, W this has half again as much cell and a coil platform four other devices share; against the VOOPOO Drag X3 Pod Mod Kit 8,0W, it reaches the same power without asking you to buy anything else.
Everything else on the pod-mod shelf stops at sixty watts. Past this point, int the two vape mods go considerably further, and both want cells of their own.
The first coil on an eighty-watt device
The higher the power, the less forgiving a dry coil is, and this is the most powerful sealed-battery device here. Wet the cotton through the side ports, fill the cartridge, refit it and give it a full five minutes before the first draw.
Then start low. The supplied 0.15 ohm coil is rated for sixty to eighty watts, and beginning at sixty and working up is the difference between a coil that lasts and one that tastes scorched by the weekend.
